What you'll do

  • Set the technical direction for authentication systems
  • Lead complex initiatives from conception through delivery
  • Collaborate with engineering leadership, product management, and cross-functional partners
  • Spend about 55% of time on backend development in Go, 25% on technical leadership and collaboration, and 20% on operations and reliability
  • Define and own technical architecture for authentication systems, including edge authentication redesign
  • Lead design and implementation of large-scale, multi-quarter initiatives across services and teams
  • Mentor and develop senior engineers
  • Serve as technical authority for identity protocols at Grafana
  • Drive cross-team alignment on authentication standards, patterns, and best practices
  • Represent Grafana Labs at meetups and conferences
  • Contribute to the broader identity and authentication community

What they require

  • Deep, proven expertise in distributed systems engineering with Go
  • Track record of owning and delivering large-scale production systems end-to-end
  • Demonstrated ability to define technical direction and drive architectural decisions independently
  • Impact extending beyond immediate team
  • Extensive experience building and operating low-latency, high-throughput services
  • Experience with distributed, multi-tenant environments
  • Proven track record of leading and delivering complex, multi-quarter initiatives spanning multiple teams or systems
  • Ability to mentor and develop senior engineers
  • Strong understanding of designing systems that balance reliability, security, and product velocity
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Able to convey complex technical decisions to engineering leadership and non-technical stakeholders
  • Expert-level understanding of modern identity standards and threat models
  • Ability to implement identity standards securely at scale
  • Independent attitude and strong communication skills for a remote-first engineering organization
