What you'll do

  • Collaborate with engineers across multiple areas of ownership to build and maintain scalable systems and applications from end-to-end.
  • Take on large, complex initiatives independently; identify unknowns, gather input, break down ambiguous problems, and communicate progress clearly.
  • Lead technical discussions across teams, partnering closely with Build and Product to define requirements and decide practical, high-quality approaches.
  • Develop solutions to problems faced by our users, articulating tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences, and incorporating feedback.
  • Take ownership of architectural direction, making sound implementation decisions for reliability, scalability, and sustainability.
  • Contribute to code, code reviews, and production troubleshooting, including on-call rotations.
  • Anticipate technical risks, prioritize technical debt, and proactively address them.
  • Strengthen teams by mentoring, giving feedback, and stepping in when needed.
  • Drive technical innovation by researching and adopting new tools, technologies, or patterns.
  • Support the Safer team's backend services, APIs, and high-volume data-processing pipelines.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to support system reliability and incident response.

What they require

  • Substantial experience building and operating backend services in production, including Python.
  • Hands-on experience deploying or supporting production applications in Kubernetes.
  • Experience with operating services in a production cloud environment.
  • Strong architectural judgment and ability to handle ambiguous problems.
  • Autonomous with sound judgment knowing when to seek input.
  • Effective written communication for remote collaboration.
  • Ability to work across unfamiliar parts of a codebase.
  • Capability to influence technical decisions and mentor other engineers.
  • Empathy for users and advocacy for the product.
  • Flexibility with on-call rotations.
