GiveWell is seeking a Staff Accountant to manage transactional and operational accounting, including accounts payable, month-end close, and reconciliations. This role supports the Finance team in ensuring accurate and transparent financial operations as the organization scales.

What you'll do

  • Owning accounts payable and employee expense processes, including invoice processing, vendor relationships, credit card program administration, and employee expense reimbursements.
  • Supporting month-end and quarterly close by recording journal entries for payroll, benefits, credit card and employee expenses, prepaids, and accruals.
  • Performing and improving our monthly bank reconciliation process.
  • Triaging and responding to finance-related staff questions as the first point of contact on the Finance team.
  • Supporting annual compliance processes, contributing to the audit and 990 preparation.

What they require

  • 2+ years of experience in accounting, accounts payable, or a related finance role.
  • Track record of accuracy and reliability in transactional and operational accounting work.
  • Solid foundational understanding of debits, credits, and how the books work.
  • Experience with supporting financial audits and annual compliance processes such as the 990.
  • Experience with accounts payable processes, including invoice processing, vendor management, and expense reimbursements.
  • Comfortable with Excel formulas, filters, and pivot tables.
  • Highly organized and meticulous in preparing, documenting, and tracking work.
  • Keen detail orientation and strong communication skills.
  • Experience with or interest in process improvement.
  • Preferred: Alignment with GiveWell’s values and passion about its mission.
  • Preferred: Experience in public accounting (Big 4 or similar).
  • Preferred: Comfortable working cross-functionally with non-finance colleagues and communicating clearly with internal stakeholders.
