What you'll do

  • Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team.
  • Lead engineers on the team through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems.
  • Ensure everyone is supported throughout delivery.
  • Support peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design, and analytics.
  • Participate in ideation, articulate technical constraints, and partner on decisions that consider risks and trade-offs.
  • Proactively identify project, process, technology, or business issues, advocate for them, and lead in solving them.
  • Support the operations and availability of the team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting keep-the-lights-on and on-call efforts.
  • Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards for the team.
  • Advocate for code review and design standards beyond the team through writing and tech talks.
  • Help develop talent on the team by providing feedback and guidance and leading by example.

What they require

  • 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
  • Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes.
  • Experience defining a technical plan for the delivery of a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple and extensible design.
  • Writes high quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
  • Proficient at making significant changes in a large code base.
  • Has developed a suite of tools and practices that enable safe large-codebase changes for themselves and their team.
  • Demonstrated ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from the team, manager, and stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills supporting effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Candidates must reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.
