Senior legal counsel with 6+ years of legal experience, including 2+ years on non-deposit investment products. Must know securities/investment regulatory frameworks and be able to advise product, compliance, risk, engineering, and operations teams. Hiring in the United States or Canada, including listed offices or remote within either country.

What you'll do

  • Serve as the primary legal advisor for Mercury Treasury and Mercury Invest, products through which business and consumer customers access non-deposit investment products.
  • Advise across the full product life cycle, including new feature development, disclosures, marketing and customer communications content, and operational matters with regulatory impacts.
  • Build relationships across product, compliance, risk, engineering, and operations and bring legal perspective into conversations early.
  • Work closely with Mercury's compliance team on regulatory matters affecting investment products.
  • Interpret requirements, pressure-test approaches, and support examination readiness with FINRA and the SEC.
  • Contribute across Legal on other product areas over time.
  • Use working knowledge of AI tools in legal workflows to find ways to drive efficiency.
  • Translate dense regulatory concepts into straightforward narratives for product teams, stakeholders, and external audiences.
  • Embrace new regulations, market shifts, and product pivots as learning opportunities.
  • Scope cross-functional projects.
  • Pressure-test product designs.
  • Build operational processes alongside compliance and operations partners.

What they require

  • 6+ years of legal experience, with at least 2 years focused on non-deposit investment products.
  • Familiarity with the Investment Advisers Act, Securities Act, Investment Company Act, Regulation Best Interest, Form CRS/ADV, FINRA rules, and related regulatory frameworks.
  • Preferred: Some in-house experience.
  • Preferred: Exposure to regulatory agencies relevant to these products, whether as a member of agency staff or as part of an industry role.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to tailor communication to the audience.
  • Proactive sense of ownership.
  • Strong working knowledge of AI use cases within legal roles and/or financial services generally and genuine interest in using AI to drive efficiency.
  • Some additional experience outside the investments/brokerage space.
  • Broader foundation in financial services, payments, or fintech.
  • Expected to have a point of view about what regulation requires and how the product can meet that bar in an elegant, scalable, customer-friendly way.
  • Comfort treating ambiguity as an invitation rather than a reason to pause.
  • Ability to read regulation for what it permits, not just what it prohibits.
  • Motivated by cross-functional, product-improving work beyond traditional legal practice.
