What you'll do

  • Serve as the single point of contact and strategic bridge to Global Technology Solutions (Enterprise IT function), ensuring R&D systems align with global infrastructure, corporate cybersecurity, identity management, and cloud platform standards while advocating for specialized technical requirements.
  • Oversee the engineering, architecting, and deployment strategies for platforms & systems, balancing on-prem, hybrid cloud, and multi-tenant SaaS environments based on business needs.
  • Architect robust, low-latency API layers and data buses to bridge disparate third-party applications, ensuring seamless data interoperability across the end-to-end organizational pipeline.
  • Implement modern observability frameworks, distributed tracing, and real-time telemetry across infrastructure and applications to proactively manage system health, identify bottlenecks, and resolve failures.
  • Lead the design, configuration, and deployment of High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters and containerized environments optimized for compute-heavy, complex processing systems.
  • Provide oversight for the engineering and maintenance of the underlying storage fabric, data lakes, and pipelines that manage the full ingest, storage, and processing lifecycle of datasets for the Research function.
  • Manage the systems engineering and product development lifecycle, codebase evolution, patch management, and automated deployments of customized platforms and applications, ensuring long-term technical sustainability for the Research function.
  • Act as the technical SME & oversee the design, on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture, engineering vector storage integrations, advanced chunking strategies, and semantic retrieval layers.
  • Design and implement agentic AI system patterns, orchestrating multi-agent frameworks that can securely handle complex, multi-step autonomous workflows and tasks.
  • Engineer pipelines capable of handling multi-modal AI inputs and outputs, allowing core systems to ingest, process, and reason across diverse data types simultaneously.
  • Manage the technical change strategy for foundational infrastructure overhauls and cloud migrations in collaboration with GTS.
  • Drive organizational alignment around unified integration standards, guiding systems engineering, development, and vendor teams toward optimized technical architectures.
  • Collaborate with Global Technology Solutions (Enterprise IT) in the technical implementation of secure, enterprise-grade AI proxy layers and gateways, ensuring that proprietary data, information & systems, and intellectual property are strictly sandboxed.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing GRDTS team focused on Systems Engineering.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability and drive professional development.
  • Ensure all systems and platforms adhere to relevant pharmaceutical industry regulations and internal security policies.
  • Liaise with vendors, Enterprise IT partners, audit, and compliance to coordinate system implementation and change activities.
  • Ensure the team is trained in and embeds CSV, compliance, and health authority requirements into operational activities.
  • Collaborate with R&D functions and teams on standards and best practices to attain business goals.
  • Engage with peers to define, sponsor, and execute continuous improvements.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing GRDTS team dedicated to Systems Engineering.

What they require

  • 12+ years of professional experience in data, digital & information technology with direct oversight and experience in the Systems Engineering area in the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, and/or Medical Device industries
  • 7+ years of proven leadership experience at a senior level, directing a team of multi-skilled direct reports and associate-level team members.
  • Strong experience in ML/AI/genAI methods and technologies from a Systems Engineering angle.
  • Business relationship management acumen and demonstrable success as a change agent leading or contributing to significant transformational initiatives in organizations.
  • Strong experience with software lifecycle methodologies, 21CFR Part 11 compliance, and GxP computer systems validation (CSV), ICH guidelines.
  • Accomplished in building and development of people and teams, comfortable working with a broad cross section of people in direct and matrixed relationships
  • Proficient in various project management disciplines (i.e., Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Lean etc.)
  • Bachelor or above
  • Some travel expected as part of assigned duties
  • A successful candidate is a dynamic leader who brings deep end-to-end pharma / biotech domain knowledge with technical expertise related to digital & technology systems, systems engineering, processes, data science, analytics, AI, & genAI.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects across different sub-functions in a global, geographically diverse environment, and building and sustaining teams in times of ambiguity are all critical success factors for this role.
  • An ideal candidate will adapt communication cadences and problem-solving skills to accommodate stakeholders, partners, and team members, exercise diplomacy and effective influence to reach consensus, and build strong relationships.
  • Enterprise-to-R&D Infrastructure Bridging: Acting as the primary liaison to global Enterprise IT, aligning R&D platforms with Enterprise cybersecurity, identity management, and cloud standards while successfully advocating for specialized Research needs.
  • External Platform Technical Assessment: Technically evaluating and stress-testing externally developed platforms, vendor solutions, and SaaS architectures to verify their scalability, security, integration readiness, and alignment with Enterprise engineering standards.
  • Internal & Vendor Platform Integration: Engineering secure, unified integration layers that connect internal applications seamlessly with externally developed third-party platforms.
  • Full-Ecosystem Observability & Reliability: Implementing real-time telemetry and monitoring across all internal and vendor-hosted applications to maximize platform uptime and performance.
  • Advanced Computer & AI Architecture Scaling: Scalability planning for cloud environments, high-performance computing, and emerging AI frameworks (e.g., enterprise RAG, secure AI gateways).
  • Technical Governance & Talent Upskilling: Driving adherence to unified architectural standards across internal teams and vendors while managing the reskilling roadmap for technical staff.
  • Objective Technical Due-Diligence: A highly analytical approach to reviewing vendor codebases, architecture diagrams, APIs, and SLAs to separate marketing claims from true engineering readiness.
  • Enterprise & Domain Diplomatic Mindset: The ability to navigate global Enterprise IT processes, translate core infrastructure constraints to the R&D team, and effectively negotiate exceptions for specialized scientific technical stacks.
  • Ecosystem-Level System Thinking: Viewing internal applications, cloud infrastructure, and external vendor platforms as a singular, cohesive, and scalable system.
