Optional skills

What you'll do

  • Build streaming and batch pipelines that ingest, normalise, and distribute market, trading, and portfolio data, resilient to feed and exchange failures.
  • Build self-serve tooling such as SDKs, patterns, templates, and AI agents so other teams can publish, consume, and build on data products without waiting on the Central Data Team.
  • Own data contracts and schema evolution to prevent schema changes from becoming multi-team coordination events.
  • Design the lakehouse and time-series layer around consumer query patterns.
  • Build and evolve the Data Governance and Data Quality Framework, including stale-feed detection, schema validation, range checks, idempotent writes, lineage, ownership, and self-healing.
  • Build derived analytics for cross-exchange spreads, VWAP at depth, order book microstructure, portfolio views, exposure, and performance.
  • Make observability, cost, and performance first-class from day one.
  • Treat infrastructure as code using Docker, Terraform, and CI/CD alongside the Central Infrastructure Team.
  • Work in the open by writing things down and partnering closely with Architecture, Infrastructure, Platform, and other teams.

What they require

  • 8+ years of building production data systems that other people rely on.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, including reasoning about what the engine is doing with queries.
  • Ability to write code that is easy for someone else to read, test, and delete later.
  • Strong understanding of data modelling for both streaming and analytical workloads.
  • Takes efficiency, quality, idempotency, and observability seriously by default.
  • Experience designing and operating streaming systems on Kafka, Redpanda, MSK, or Kinesis, with opinions about partitioning, consumer groups, offsets, and schema registries.
  • Experience using a time-series store in production, ideally ClickHouse; TimescaleDB, QuestDB, or similar are also acceptable.
  • Ability to discuss table design as a function of query patterns.
  • Experience working with lakehouse architecture and reasoning about table layout, partitioning, and compaction as design choices that shape query performance and storage cost.
  • Builds for self-healing and idempotency, with safe reprocessing, retries that do not double-write, and systems that recover without a human in the loop.
  • Uses Docker, Terraform, and CI/CD as part of normal work.
  • Thinks about cost and performance early.
  • Instruments systems while building, with logs, metrics, and traces from day one.
  • Designs for data quality and governance up front, covering contracts, validation, lineage, and ownership.
  • Reasons from first principles when a problem is new, stays pragmatic when it is not, and updates views when learning more.
  • Treats trading desks, wealth and asset management, product, risk, finance, compliance, and research as customers and communicates with them that way.
  • Optimises for outcomes over output.
  • Takes ownership end-to-end across design, shipping, operation, and improvement.
  • Says what they think, including unpopular takes, and changes their mind when the argument is better.
  • Makes the people around them better through real reviews and helping juniors grow.
  • Curious about how markets work.
  • Honest about what they know and do not know, and quick to close the gap.
  • Understands financial market data: order books, trades, reference data, portfolios, and exposures.
  • Preferred: Crypto, TradFi, or both are a strong plus.
  • Preferred: Lakehouse experience.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with metadata/lineage platforms.
  • Preferred: Interest in Rust.

Benefits

  • A from-scratch mandate as one of the first hires in the Central Data Team, shaping the platform, standards, and team culture.
  • Close working relationships with Architecture, Infrastructure, Platform, and the trading desks.
  • Autonomy on how you work.
  • Flexible hours.
  • Remote-first work.
  • Business-hours on-call shared across the team.
  • Competitive salary package with various benefits.
  • Regular online get-togethers.
  • Yearly onsite where everyone is in the same room.
