What you'll do

  • Report to the Managing Consultant, Strategic Communications.
  • Serve as BME’s lead consultant for creative and communications strategy.
  • Help public health clients translate complex information into engaging, accessible, and actionable materials.
  • Partner directly with government and public-sector clients to develop communication strategies, visual designs, and narrative tools that strengthen public health programs, initiatives, and community engagement.
  • Perform approximately 85% project work, 5% administrative work, and 10% business development.
  • Lead project design and attend to client relationships.
  • Serve as a technical expert and/or individual contributor on highly specialized workstreams as needed.
  • Manage projects to exemplary client satisfaction.
  • Recognize business opportunities with existing clients and work with leadership to pursue them.
  • Proactively do outreach and sourcing of new clients.
  • Source RFPs of interest.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to clients on communication strategy, message development, and creative storytelling.
  • Navigate project ambiguity and pivot seamlessly to maintain steady partnership and meet client needs as they evolve.
  • Develop tailored work plans that align with client objectives and target audiences, including messaging frameworks, visual identity systems, and outreach strategies.
  • Lead client discovery sessions to understand goals, audiences, and desired outcomes; translate insights into creative solutions and deliverables.
  • Facilitate workshops, presentations, and stakeholder discussions to guide creative and communications approaches.
  • Oversee the development of high-quality, audience-centered creative deliverables including reports, infographics, presentations, campaign collateral, and digital media.
  • Translate technical or policy-heavy content into clear, visually compelling materials that promote understanding and engagement.
  • Maintain creative standards and ensure brand consistency across client projects.
  • Manage the design and production process from concept through delivery, coordinating with internal and external designers as needed.
  • Act as a trusted partner to client leads, ensuring high-quality service, timely delivery, and creative excellence.
  • Collaborate closely with BME’s consulting and business development teams to integrate design and communications strategies into broader client scopes of work.
  • Lead proposal development and thought leadership efforts related to creative strategy, communications, and design.
  • Develop and track metrics to assess communication effectiveness and audience engagement.
  • Identify emerging design and communication trends relevant to public health and government communications.
  • Continuously refine creative processes and tools to enhance efficiency and client value.
  • Support BME’s internal marketing work when surge capacity is needed.
  • Occasional travel to client sites, conferences, or meetings as required.

What they require

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Graphic Design, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Preferred: Master’s preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum 6 years experience in creative strategy, communications consulting, and design leadership for government, nonprofit, or mission-driven clients.
  • Minimum 5 years client-facing experience, including 2 or more in project leadership roles.
  • Exceptional client management, facilitation, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced consulting environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholder relationships simultaneously.
  • Deep understanding and ease of messaging across a variety of audiences, including general public and elected officials.
  • Strong design and visual storytelling portfolio demonstrating excellence across digital and print mediums.
  • A portfolio is required for consideration.
  • Proficiency in relevant design applications (Adobe Suite or similar) and familiarity with presentation and collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Figma, Canva, etc.).
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to synthesize complex ideas into clear, engaging narratives and visuals.
  • Alignment with BME’s shared values.
  • Preferred: People management experience preferred.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with public health, government communications, or health equity initiatives strongly preferred.
  • Full-time position based in a home office environment within the U.S.
