No BS summary

Senior actuary with 6-9 years carrier-side (pricing actuary, underwriting manager, cat modeling lead, or portfolio manager) who has personally owned a loss ratio, rate filing, or treaty renewal and can name the book, state, and number. Must have practitioner-level fluency in Touchstone, RMS, or AIR and a network of 15+ chief actuaries who take their calls. Travel ~40%.

Required skills

Touchstone/RMS/AIR

What you'll do

  • Underwrite: Alongside the customer. Embed in a carrier or reinsurer's book, Florida wind, California wildfire, Texas hail. Run Prometheus against their in-force exposure and find where the incumbent model is wrong, proving it at parcel resolution.
  • Author: The memo 400circulates when you are not in the room. A one-page memo to a Chief Actuary that diagnoses a 12-point loss ratio divergence, concedes what should be conceded, and recommends a decision.
  • Create: The category, account by account. You are not competing for an existing budget line, you are arguing the line should exist, and that argument only lands from someone the buyer recognizes as a peer.
  • Turn: The field back into the product. What you learn inside the book becomes the roadmap, with direct, unfiltered access to engineering and the CEO, and the expectation that you use it.
  • Diagnose: Divergence and name the source. You will be right sometimes and wrong sometimes, and that honesty is not a soft skill here, it is the entire sales motion.

What they require

  • 6 to 9 years inside a carrier, reinsurer, or MGA: pricing actuary, underwriting coverage manager, cat modeling lead, or portfolio manager. Carrier-side first, longer than any vendor tenure.
  • Personal ownership of a loss ratio, a rate filing, or a treaty renewal. Literally able to name the book, the state, the year, and the number.
  • Practitioner fluency in Touchstone, RMS, or AIR, as a user who distrusted an output, not someone who sold or integrated one.
  • A real network at the decision is needed: layer: fifteen or more Chief Actuaries, Chief Underwriting Officers, and Heads of Catastrophe Modeling who would take a call today and not brokers. Not IT.
  • Ability to accommodate travel as needed (~40%).
  • You have sat in the seat we are selling into. That is the job requirement.
  • You write. You have argued a position and shown the math in a memo, a filing narrative, or a whitepaper, anything longer than a slide.
  • You will be wrong in public. In the first ten minutes of a meeting, you will tell a Chief Actuary accurately. Where our model diverges from theirs and why we might be the ones.
