What you'll do

  • Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to produce an industry-leading vector database offering, supplying unparalleled speed and relevance in search.
  • Contribute to Elasticsearch full time, building new search features and fixing intriguing bugs, with the goal of making the code easier to understand.
  • Work with a globally distributed team of experienced engineers focused on the vector search capabilities of Elasticsearch.
  • Be an expert on how Elasticsearch implements vector similarity in support of search relevance.
  • Work with community members on issues and pull requests, triaging and handling them.
  • Write idiomatic modern Java.

What they require

  • Implemented novel techniques in vector similarity on a search platform with a large user base or progressed the academic field of vector similarity information retrieval.
  • Professional experience with vector similarity and vector databases, with applied HNSW, IVF, or other algorithms on search platforms at scale.
  • Strong skills in core Java and standard library of data structures, concurrency constructs, and lambdas.
  • High level of autonomy in managing projects end-to-end, including technical design and collaboration.
  • Comfortable developing collaboratively, giving and receiving feedback.
  • Experience with several data storage technologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug, and optimize code in large systems.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and teams, seamlessly switching between different projects, codebases, or teams.
  • Asynchronous, direct, transparent communication skills in a distributed team.
