Join the Elasticsearch - Search team as a Principal Software Developer to lead the development of an industry-leading vector database. You'll focus on enhancing vector similarity search within Elasticsearch, designing and implementing new features, improving existing functionality, and resolving bugs.

What you'll do

  • Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to produce an industry-leading vector database offering, supplying unparalleled speed and relevance in search.
  • Contribute to Elasticsearch in full time capacity, building new search features and fixing intriguing bugs while making the code easier to understand.
  • Work with a globally distributed team of experienced engineers focused on the vector search capabilities of Elasticsearch.
  • Be the expert on how Elasticsearch implements vector similarity in support of search relevance, and everyone will turn to you for questions.
  • Work with community members on issues and pull requests, triaging and handling them.
  • Write idiomatic modern Java, as Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java.

What they require

  • Professional experience with vector similarity and vector databases, having used HNSW, IVF, or other relevant algorithms and libraries on search platforms at scale.
  • Strong skills in core Java, with fluency in the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and guide projects from technical design to implementation with other engineers.
  • Comfortable developing collaboratively, giving and receiving feedback on code, approaches, and APIs.
  • Familiar with several data storage technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra and understanding their workings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with respect, empathy, and trust in interactions.
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and teams, seamlessly transitioning between projects and codebases.
  • Demonstrated capability to work in a distributed team using asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.
