The Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) is seeking a Media Monetization Consultant to provide strategic support to independent media outlets operating in restrictive environments across Latin America. The consultancy will focus on strengthening these outlets' capacity to develop sustainable business models, diversify revenue streams, design monetization strategies tailored to their specific contexts, and improve long-term financial sustainability.

What you'll do

  • Provide remote, tailored advisory support on media monetization and sustainability to media organizations operating in restrictive environments across Latin America throughout the project implementation period.
  • Conduct assessments, design, and support the implementation of business models and outlet including memberships, donations, subscriptions, advertising, crowdfunding, service.
  • Provide guidance on the design and implementation of monetization campaigns, as implementing monitoring tools to evaluate the effectiveness of the initiatives measurable progress, and the delivery of documented outputs requirements.
  • Apply a practical, results-oriented methodology based on continuous mentoring, well as on setting financial objectives, defining performance indicators, and provision, partnerships, and other sustainable funding mechanisms.
  • Advise media teams on identifying, diversifying, and strengthening revenue streams, monetization strategies tailored to the context, capacities, and needs of each media.
  • Conduct an initial assessment with each assigned media outlet to evaluate its business model, identify strengths, weaknesses, and monetization opportunities, and develop a work plan with measurable objectives, indicators, and expected outcomes for the consultancy period.
  • Hold regular virtual meetings with the beneficiary media teams to monitor the implementation of their monetization plans, address questions, review progress, and agree on strategic adjustments based on the results achieved.
  • Provide hands-on technical support throughout the design, implementation, and execution of revenue-generation initiatives, including membership, donation, subscription, advertising, crowdfunding, service-based, strategic partnership, and other financial sustainability campaigns.
  • Advise media teams on setting and monitoring financial goals, budgets, revenue projections, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the effectiveness of their monetization strategies and support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize media business models by diversifying revenue streams, prioritizing high-impact initiatives, and incorporating international best practices adapted to the context of independent media operating in restrictive environments.
  • Maintain close coordination with the IWPR team to share progress, flag risks, recommend methodological adjustments when necessary, and ensure compliance with project objectives, timelines, security protocols, and reporting requirements.

What they require

  • Proven experience (minimum of 5 years) in media monetization, sustainability, business model development, or financial management for media organizations, preferably digital and independent outlets.
  • Ability to advise journalistic teams on the design and implementation of revenue- generation strategies, including memberships, donations, subscriptions, advertising, crowdfunding, service provision, strategic partnerships, and other sustainability mechanisms.
  • Strong knowledge of financial planning, business model development, revenue diversification, performance indicators, and tools for monitoring and evaluating results.
  • Proven experience in fundraising from the philanthropic sector, including foundations, institutional donors, and international organizations.
  • Ability to work remotely with teams operating in complex environments or with limited connectivity.
  • Knowledge of or sensitivity to the challenges faced by independent media operating in restrictive environments, including barriers to accessing funding opportunities and developing sustainable business models.
