What you'll do

  • Prepare accurate, complete, and well-organized case files for VAWA petitions, T visas, U visas, and humanitarian-based Adjustment of Status matters.
  • Draft and review affidavits, declarations, correspondence, and supporting legal documents under attorney supervision.
  • Conduct legal research that helps attorneys evaluate case options, develop strategies, and address case-specific issues.
  • Manage an assigned caseload, track milestones, and ensure filing requirements and deadlines are met.
  • Coordinate with clients in English and Spanish to gather records, clarify information, and resolve missing documentation.
  • Keep clients informed about case progress, upcoming steps, appointments, and preparation requirements.
  • Maintain accurate case notes, documents, deadlines, and status updates in the case management system.
  • Prepare clients for consultations, hearings, court appearances, and other legal proceedings with empathy and clear guidance.
  • Protect confidential and sensitive information while complying with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, the Senior Legal Assistant, and other team members to resolve case challenges and balance departmental priorities.

What they require

  • At least 2 years of legal assistant experience
  • direct work on humanitarian immigration matters (VAWA petitions, U visas, T visas, or humanitarian-based Adjustment of Status)
  • Professional written and verbal fluency in both English and Spanish
  • Experience drafting affidavits, declarations, and other legal documents and preparing case files for submission
  • Ability to independently manage a caseload, maintain accurate records, and meet multiple legal deadlines
  • experience using legal research tools and case management software
  • Nice to have: paralegal certification or legal assistant diploma or bachelor's degree in related field
  • Nice to have: experience preparing clients for hearings, interviews, court appearances, or other legal proceedings
