No BS summary

First in-house lawyer for an applied AI company, starting part-time/fractional or full-time and scaling the legal function. Must have a JD, active California bar membership or exceptional out-of-state profile, strong commercial transactions and technology/AI experience. Los Angeles preferred; remote considered with regular HQ travel.

What you'll do

  • Shape deal terms for outcome-based and productized commercial work.
  • Help win major research grants and put them to work.
  • Shape partnerships with government agencies, research labs, and universities.
  • Support expanding government contracts and programs.
  • Work on ownership, licensing, protection, and publication of intellectual property.
  • Handle NDAs and vendor agreements, employment, corporate governance, and processes that let legal scale.
  • Work alongside executives, making key calls and scaling the legal function.
  • Build a real partnership with outside counsel: know when to bring them in, how to brief them, and how to get the most out of them.

What they require

  • Strong generalist with solid fundamentals, judgment from real experience, and ability to pick up new areas fast.
  • Real business sense: ability to read the gap between strict interpretation and what is sensible, identify real risk, and give practical guidance.
  • Negotiator who stays flexible, protects the company, and knows which terms are worth fighting for.
  • Clear translator in both directions: turn complex business dynamics into plain strategy, and translate business goals into the right legal structure.
  • No-job-too-small instincts; able to handle a one-page NDA and a government contracting strategy without ego.
  • Technical background, or deep experience with technology and technical people.
  • Comfortable around AI and able to hold your own with engineers.
  • AI-native way of working: uses the latest AI tools in legal practice with care for confidentiality, accuracy, and privilege.
  • Strong organizational and process skills and a systems mind, with an ownership mentality for building.
  • Creativity and hunger to find the best answer, including approaches most lawyers would not reach for.
  • Alignment with how the company operates: moves fast, takes high-variance bets, cares about getting things right, and owns outcomes.
  • JD from an accredited law school, with active, good-standing membership in the California bar (open to options for exceptional out-of-state candidates).
  • Required: real strength in commercial transactions and in technology/AI work.
  • Preferred: experience across IP, nonprofit, grants, and government.
  • Enough experience to have real judgment, usually substantial in-house time and/or strong firm training.
  • Complete integrity and discretion with sensitive matters.
  • Comfort in a fast, ambiguous, high-ownership environment.
  • Ideally Los Angeles; remote considered for the right person, with regular travel to HQ.
