What you'll do

  • Provide high-level financial strategy and advisory support to help the firm make proactive business decisions.
  • Build budgeting and forecasting processes that reflect the realities of a contingency-fee law firm with variable monthly revenue.
  • Help firm leadership understand monthly operating needs, payroll stability, cash flow timing, and the impact of case wins or losses.
  • Translate existing financial data into clear, digestible, executive-level reports that the firm owner and Office Administrator/Bookkeeper can use for decision-making.
  • Analyze operating expenses, profit margins, spending patterns, and opportunities to improve efficiency.
  • Help leadership plan around revenue variability, major case outcomes, tax considerations, and future financial needs.
  • Work with the external CPA firm to identify tax planning opportunities and support more strategic tax-related decision-making.
  • Create dashboards, KPIs, or reporting frameworks that give leadership better visibility into firm performance.
  • Assess current tools, including Litify, Accounting Seed, Excel, and existing reporting processes, then recommend practical improvements where needed.
  • Work directly with the firm owner and Office Administrator/Bookkeeper as the third member of the firm’s financial leadership structure.

What they require

  • Prior experience as a Fractional CFO or senior finance leader advising business owners, ideally small to medium size law firms.
  • Strong preference for experience with plaintiff-side contingency-fee law firms or professional services businesses with variable revenue.
  • Strong background in financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow modeling, profitability analysis, and executive reporting.
  • Ability to explain financial information clearly, translate data into recommendations, and help leadership make proactive decisions.
  • Able to handle confidential financial information with professionalism and trustworthiness.
  • Comfortable working with clean financial data and turning it into practical business insight.
  • Experience with Excel and financial reporting tools required.
  • Preferred: familiarity with Litify and Accounting Seed.
  • Best suited for someone who enjoys strategic advisory work rather than transactional bookkeeping or routine accounting tasks.
  • Must be comfortable with a true fractional engagement of approximately 10–15 hours per month, with potentially more involvement during onboarding.
  • Must understand the challenge of variable revenue, no recurring revenue, no traditional accounts receivable, long case timelines, and cash flow planning around major case wins or losses.
