No BS summary

Engineering team lead in Australia with 4+ years of people-management experience. Needs strong software architecture and delivery ownership, with enough hands-on depth to write/review production code and lead system design for data-intensive analytics products.

What you'll do

  • Own delivery end to end: plan and execute work across one or more quarters, set clear goals with the team, hold them to account, and make sure work ships reliably, sustainably, and in full.
  • Lead, grow, and mentor the team: develop about 3 engineers in a cross-functional team of about 5, support their career growth, and guide architecture, decision-making, and technical scaffolding.
  • Set the standard for communication, accountability, and engineering culture.
  • Use technical leadership and influence to lift others building on RVO, including Customer Success, beyond direct reports.
  • Contribute to system design and architectural decisions.
  • Write and review production-quality code across performance-critical, data-intensive components.
  • Own the technical core of RVO by balancing what lives in the core engineering platform versus the application layer so the solution stays performant, flexible, and maintainable.
  • Work with complex, large-scale data by shaping ingestion and data structures that synthesise disparate sources such as GIS, LiDAR, asset condition, and historical failures with a rich geospatial library across very large networks.
  • Partner with Product, Deployment, Customer Success, and Sales.
  • Get in front of customers to understand the problems utilities face.
  • Identify platform capabilities owned by other teams that RVO will depend on and line them up before the team needs them.
  • Raise the bar across engineering by influencing best practices, tooling, and long-term platform direction.
  • Help scale Neara's engineering culture as the company grows.

What they require

  • At least 4 years experience leading a team where people management was part of the role.
  • Software engineering and people leader who has owned delivery end to end.
  • Comfortable operating across engineering and product.
  • Accountable for outcomes, not just outputs.
  • Experienced leading, mentoring, and growing engineers at multiple levels.
  • Able to get up to speed fast in unfamiliar technical territory, build context without hand-holding, find the heart of the problem, and deliver.
  • Strong product sense and ability to partner with Product.
  • Keeps the team focused on customer outcomes and stays close to what utilities actually face.
  • Able to bring an engineering perspective to hard, open-ended problems rather than waiting to be handed them.
  • Experience delivering ambitious, complex projects incrementally, shipping real progress along the way and changing course based on evidence.
  • Deep technical credibility with a strong track record architecting and shipping complex, production-grade systems.
  • Judgement to go deep and make sound trade-offs without out-experting specialists.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • No-ego, outcome-oriented, and detail-obsessed approach.
  • Preferred: Experience leading software teams on financial, investment, statistical modelling, or other analysis-heavy, regulated products.
  • Preferred: Exposure to geospatial systems, utilities, energy, simulation, or physics-based platforms.
  • Preferred: Strong mathematical reasoning or a mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering background.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary + ESOP.
  • Significant career development and growth opportunities.
  • Fully flexible working arrangements with a well-stocked office in Redfern.
