What you'll do

  • Lead a team of engineers and own both delivery and team development.
  • Lead continuous improvement within the team through fast iterations that improve growth and success over time.
  • Support team members' professional well-being and career development through regular 1:1s, growth plans, performance reviews, and candid feedback.
  • Develop the next layer of leadership, including tech leads, senior engineers ready to manage, and ICs ready to step into staff roles.
  • Write and review code to stay credible and current in technical decisions.
  • Drive architectural and technical design decisions with senior individual contributors.
  • Uphold engineering standards through constructive pull-request reviews and a healthy release process.
  • Keep the team's components scalable and in a healthy state.
  • Work AI-augmented and lead an AI-augmented team while maintaining quality standards for shipped work.
  • Own the team's commitments, delivery timelines, and quality bar.
  • Run planning, prioritization, and delivery cadence without becoming overly bureaucratic.
  • Partner with the Technical Product Owner and Product team on scope, sequencing, tradeoffs, and roadmap direction.
  • Understand broader business objectives, translate them for the team, and align engineering work with those objectives.
  • React to change by re-planning, re-prioritizing, and re-staffing while keeping the team engaged and steady.
  • Own hiring for the team, including interviewing, decision-making, and maintaining the hiring bar.
  • Recruit, coach, and make difficult personnel decisions when needed to uphold team standards.
  • Act as a role model for other engineering managers by sharing operating models, mentoring peers, and raising the management bench.
  • Communicate clearly upward to leadership with the right level of context and prioritized escalations.
  • Empower senior engineers to own key product areas and coach team members to stay focused and aware of their impact.
  • Partner with Product, Design, GTM, Customer Success, and other teams to support cross-team alignment.

What they require

  • 10+ years of engineering experience, including 4+ years in engineering management roles where coding was part of the responsibilities.
  • Hands-on, real-life experience building cloud-based SaaS products.
  • Experience running services in production on AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Experience owning availability, cost, and the customer-facing surface.
  • API-first mindset, with products built to be fully functional and available through APIs for humans and agents.
  • Strong background in databases, SQL, query optimization, and BigQuery.
  • Track record of visibly transforming an engineering team through measurable improvements in delivery velocity, technical quality, or team caliber.
  • Deep technical fluency in the team's primary stack.
  • Ability to read, write, and review code at a senior level while staying current.
  • Strong opinions on how high-performing engineering teams operate.
  • Clear philosophy on hiring, coaching, performance management, and technical decision-making.
  • Excellent judgment under pressure, including making calls quickly with imperfect information, communicating clearly, and taking responsibility for outcomes.
  • Direct, candid communication, including giving and receiving hard feedback well.
  • Must be located in the East Coast US, UK, Ireland, Estonia, Netherlands, Sweden, or Israel.
  • Experience leading an engineering team, typically 5+ engineers, in a delivery-focused environment for 3+ years.
  • Solid knowledge or hands-on experience with Node.js for backend services, APIs, and real-time systems.
  • Experience designing and operating systems in cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Understanding of cloud networking fundamentals, including VPCs, subnets, routing tables, load balancers, ingress controllers, security groups, firewall rules, DNS, and service discovery.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, including cluster architecture, workload orchestration, and production troubleshooting.
  • Clear understanding of network plumbing across clouds and VPCs, including cross-cloud connectivity patterns, peering, private links, VPNs, hybrid networking, and identity and access boundaries across providers.
  • Preferred: Strong, already-established AI-augmented workflow with opinions on applying AI tools and agentic workflows to raise velocity and quality.
  • Preferred: Hands-on experience with more than a single cloud provider.
  • Preferred: Background in scaling teams, processes, or technical systems as the organization grows.
