What you'll do
- Lead a team of engineers, owning both its delivery and its development.
- Lead a mindset and process of continuous improvement within the team and meaningfully impact the team’s growth and success over time.
- Drive small, compounding improvements via fast iterations as the team’s operating rhythm.
- Take responsibility for the professional well-being and career development of team members.
- Develop engineers through regular 1:1s, growth plans, performance reviews, and direct, candid feedback.
- Develop the next layer of leadership, including tech leads, senior engineers ready to manage, and ICs ready to step into staff roles.
- Write code and review code.
- Act as a credible voice in technical decisions by staying hands-on and current.
- Drive the team's architectural and technical design decisions in partnership with senior ICs.
- Ensure alignment on technical approach and implementation.
- Uphold engineering standards through thorough, constructive pull-request review.
- Maintain a healthy release process.
- Keep the team's components scalable and in a healthy state.
- Work AI-augmented and lead an AI-augmented team.
- Apply judgment about where AI helps and hold the same quality bar for what ships.
- Own the team's commitments, including what was promised, when it was promised, and the quality bar.
- Run a disciplined cadence of planning, prioritization, and delivery without becoming a process bureaucrat.
- Partner closely with the Technical Product Owner and Product team on scope, sequencing, and tradeoffs.
- Maintain a roadmap that reflects near-term priorities and longer-term direction.
- Understand the broader business objectives behind the work.
- Translate business context for the team.
- Ensure engineering effort aligns with business objectives.
- React decisively to change through re-planning, re-prioritizing, and re-staffing as the business moves.
- Keep the team engaged and steady through change.
- Own hiring for the team.
- Interview thoughtfully, decide quickly, and refuse to lower the bar to fill seats.
- Recruit, coach, and make hard calls toward the team standard when needed.
- Operate as a role model for other engineering managers across the organization.
- Share your operating model, mentor peers, and raise the management bench.
- Communicate clearly and succinctly upward, giving leadership the right level of context.
- Prioritize escalations based on relevant, well-gathered information.
- Empower senior engineers to own key areas of the product.
- Coach team members to stay focused, intentional, and aware of their impact.
- Partner effectively with Product, Design, GTM, Customer Success, and other teams.
- Raise challenges and opportunities constructively to support cross-team alignment.
What they require
- 10+ years of engineering experience, including 4+ years in engineering management roles where you actively coded as part of your responsibilities.
- Hands-on, real-life experience building cloud-based SaaS products.
- Experience running services in production on AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Experience owning availability, cost, and the customer-facing surface.
- API first mindset: products are built not just for end user experience through UI, they are fully functional and available through APIs, so both humans and agents can interact with the platform.
- Strong background in databases, SQL, query optimization, and BigQuery.
- A track record of taking an engineering team and visibly transforming it, with measurable improvements in delivery velocity, technical quality, or team caliber.
- Deep technical fluency in your team's primary stack.
- Ability to read, write, and review code at a senior level while staying current.
- Strong opinions on how high-performing engineering teams operate.
- A clear philosophy on hiring, coaching, performance management, and technical decision-making.
- Excellent judgment under pressure.
- Ability to make calls quickly with imperfect information, communicate them clearly, and take responsibility for the outcomes.
- Direct, candid communication.
- Ability to give hard feedback well and hear it well.
- Preferred: A strong, already-established AI-augmented workflow, with opinions on how to apply AI tools and agentic workflows to raise both velocity and quality.
- Preferred: Hands-on experience with more than a single cloud provider.
- Preferred: Background in scaling teams, processes, or technical systems as the organization grows.
