Required skills

Clojure/Elixir/Erlang/Haskell/Scala

What you'll do

  • Stay technical by writing code on non-critical paths, reviewing PRs, and pairing with engineers on problems.
  • Create an environment where engineers have high autonomy, psychological safety, and the space to do their best work.
  • Help Griffin scale by hiring people who raise the bar and helping team members develop.
  • Shape what gets built with product leads and stakeholders, helping engineers understand why they are building something and connecting their work to real customer problems.
  • Enable your team and build the right environment.
  • Communicate with the wider business on priorities.
  • Ensure work is estimated accurately before being added to the roadmap.
  • Empower the team with ownership, turning high-level requirements into scoped work they execute.
  • Spot blockers before they derail delivery and clear them.
  • Help engineers level up.
  • Improve how the team works, including shaping pitches for better context or fixing slowing processes.
  • Build a culture where people have high autonomy, feel safe to raise problems, and focus on impact.
  • Own delivery through Shape Up cycles, turning pitches into executable work, managing the shape/architect/build phases, and making sure shipped work solves the customer problem.
  • Own accountability over technical decisions, including architecture choices, tradeoffs between extending and rebuilding, and maintaining quality in systems where correctness is required because Griffin moves real money.
  • Own engineer development in a high-autonomy environment, helping people grow and addressing performance issues without micromanagement.
  • Own hiring for a functional programming shop, finding engineers who can thrive writing Clojure or are willing to learn it, and building a team that can handle distributed systems and financial services constraints.

What they require

  • Technical skills to write code well enough to review it, pair on it, and contribute meaningfully.
  • Functional programming skills - either you've built production systems or led teams that have using Clojure, Elixir, Erlang, Haskell, Scala, or similar languages.
  • Experience building high-performing teams - you've hired well, developed engineers, and created environments where people do their best work.
  • Comfort working with product teams - you've shaped what gets built alongside PMs, not just executed on requirements handed down.
  • Comfort with high autonomy and startup pace - you trust your team to make decisions, priorities shift, and you don't need perfect clarity to move forward.
  • Preferred: Fintech domain expertise - you've managed engineering teams in payments, banking, cards, or similar areas where compliance, money movement, and correctness aren't abstract concepts.
