What you'll do
- Leading a team of engineers, owning both its delivery and its development.
- Lead a mindset and process of continuous improvement within the team and meaningfully impact the team’s growth and success over time.
- Develop engineers through regular 1:1s, growth plans, performance reviews, and direct, candid feedback.
- Develop the next layer of leadership - tech leads, senior engineers ready to manage, and ICs ready to step into staff roles.
- Write code and review code.
- Be a credible voice in technical decisions because you have hands in the work, not because of your title - you are current, not rusty.
- Drive the team's architectural and technical design decisions in partnership with senior ICs, ensuring alignment on approach and implementation.
- Uphold engineering standards through thorough, constructive pull-request review and a healthy release process, keeping the team's components scalable and in a healthy state.
- Work AI-augmented and lead an AI-augmented team, applying sharp judgment about where AI is here to help and holding the same quality bar for what ships.
- Own the team's commitments - what was promised, when it was promised, and the quality bar that was held.
- Run a disciplined cadence of planning, prioritization, and delivery without becoming a process bureaucrat.
- Partner closely with the Technical Product Owner and Product team on scope, sequencing, and tradeoffs, maintaining a roadmap that reflects both near-term priorities and longer-term direction.
- Understand the broader business objectives behind the work, translate that context for the team, and ensure engineering effort clearly aligns with those objectives.
- React decisively to change - re-planning, re-prioritizing, and re-staffing as the business moves - while keeping the team engaged and steady through the shift.
- Own hiring for your team. Interview thoughtfully, decide quickly, and refuse to lower the bar to fill every seat.
- Recruit, coach, and - when needed - make hard calls toward the standard the team is held to.
- Operate as a role model for other engineering managers across the organization: share your operating model, mentor peers, and raise the management bench.
- Communicate clearly and succinctly, giving leadership the right level of context and prioritizing escalations that deserve it.
- Empower senior engineers to own key areas of the product, and coach team members to stay focused, intentional, and aware of their impact.
- Partner effectively with Product, Design, GTM, Customer Success, and other teams - raising challenges and opportunities constructively to support cross-team alignment.
What they require
- 10+ years of engineering experience, including 4+ years in engineering management roles where you actively coded as part of your responsibilities.
- Hands-on, real-life experience building cloud-based SaaS products - running services in production on AWS, GCP, or Azure, and owning uptime, cost, and customer experience.
- API-first mindset - products are built not only to be consumed through a UI; they are fully functional and available through APIs, so both humans and agents can interact with the platform.
- Strong experience with databases, SQL, query optimization, and BigQuery.
- A track record of taking an engineering team and visibly transforming it - measurable improvements in delivery speed, technical quality, or overall team caliber.
- Deep technical fluency in your team’s primary stack. Must be able to read, write, and review code at a senior level, and be current, not rusty.
- Strong opinions on how high-performing engineering teams operate, and a clear philosophy on hiring, coaching, performance management, and technical decision-making.
- Excellent judgment under pressure. Ability to make decisions quickly with little information, communicate them, and take responsibility for the outcomes.
- Direct, transparent communication. You give hard feedback well, and you receive it well.
- Preferred: A strong, already-established AI-augmented workflow, with opinions on how to apply AI tools and agentic workflows to improve quality and velocity.
- Preferred: Background in scaling teams, processes, or technical systems as the organization grows.
