What you'll do

  • Improve GiveWell’s cause prioritization process, combining evidence, cost-effectiveness modelling, and judgement.
  • Oversee a portfolio of grant investigations and grant management in top emerging cause areas.
  • Build and lead a sub-team within the New Areas team and support team members’ professional development.
  • Create and lead ambitious research agendas and identify ways to learn about key uncertainties through initial grants.
  • Communicate externally and build a network across implementers, funders, and academia to source new ideas.
  • Directly investigate complex grantmaking opportunities, including newer program types and government-focused programs.
  • Foster a culture that is agile and responsive to new and unusual opportunities.

What they require

  • Quantitatively-oriented advanced degree(s) and substantial relevant experience using empirical tools to make evidence-based decisions (or commensurate experience without an advanced degree).
  • Typical senior research staff have 5–10 years of post-grad work experience prior to joining GiveWell.
  • Ability to combine rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, and thoughtful judgment.
  • Experience designing research agendas and managing grant portfolios.
  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to structure broad, undefined problems.
  • Demonstrated ability or willingness to manage and develop other researchers.
  • Willingness to commit to a work schedule with some overlap with American working hours.
  • Willingness to travel for international site visits and department retreats (on average 1–2 trips per year).
  • Authorization: GiveWell will sponsor US work visas on a case-by-case basis for candidates who need sponsorship.
