What you'll do
- Oversee the complete accounting cycle for multiple companies or client accounts.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing activities, ensuring deadlines and reporting requirements are met.
- Review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, payroll entries, and intercompany transactions.
- Review balance sheets, income statements, cash flow reports, and supporting schedules for accuracy and completeness.
- Ensure all financial activity is properly recorded, classified, supported, and reconciled.
- Maintain strong internal controls and identify accounting, reporting, or compliance risks.
- Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, tax professionals, and other financial partners.
- Support audit, tax, due-diligence, and financial-review requirements by maintaining complete and traceable documentation.
- Analyze financial results and identify unusual balances, variances, trends, and potential business risks.
- Look beyond individual transactions to understand their broader financial and operational impact.
- Prepare and review monthly management reporting packages.
- Provide meaningful commentary on financial performance, cash flow, profitability, working capital, and operating results.
- Translate complex accounting matters into clear, practical recommendations for clients and senior management.
- Assist with budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, and financial models.
- Ensure management reports provide an accurate and decision-useful view of the business.
- Supervise, guide, and review the work of bookkeepers, accountants, and other finance team members.
- Delegate responsibilities while maintaining accountability for the accuracy and timeliness of deliverables.
- Establish review procedures, closing schedules, accounting checklists, and quality-control standards.
- Coach team members on Canadian and U.S. accounting practices, documentation, and professional judgment.
- Identify knowledge or performance gaps and provide clear, constructive feedback.
- Serve as the escalation point for complex reconciliations, reporting issues, and client concerns.
- Promote a culture of ownership, accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Serve as a senior accounting contact for assigned clients and business stakeholders.
- Understand each client’s operations, financial structure, reporting needs, and business priorities.
- Lead accounting meetings and confidently explain financial results, issues, and recommended actions.
- Anticipate client needs instead of waiting for problems or instructions to arise.
- Maintain professional, responsive, and solutions-oriented communication.
- Manage multiple engagements and competing priorities without sacrificing quality.
- Work closely with fractional CFOs and senior advisors on reporting, forecasting, financing, restructuring, and other strategic initiatives.
- Evaluate existing accounting workflows and identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
- Develop and document accounting policies, standard operating procedures, month-end checklists, and reporting processes.
- Improve the use of accounting software, reporting platforms, spreadsheets, and supporting systems.
- Help transition clients from informal bookkeeping practices to structured, controller-level financial operations.
- Support accounting-system implementations, cleanups, migrations, and process standardization.
- Ensure processes can support growing, changing, or multi-entity businesses.
What they require
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- At least seven years of progressive accounting experience.
- Demonstrated experience as an Accounting Manager, Financial Controller, Assistant Controller, Senior Accountant, or in a comparable leadership role.
- Strong controllership experience, including oversight of month-end close, reconciliations, reporting, internal controls, and accounting operations.
- Solid knowledge of Canadian and/or U.S. accounting principles and business practices.
- Experience working with Canadian or U.S.-based companies, clients, or accounting firms.
- Strong understanding of balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and management reporting.
- Experience reviewing and supervising the work of junior accountants or bookkeepers.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
- Experience with cloud-based accounting systems such as QuickBooks Online and Xero.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with North American clients and senior business leaders.
