What you'll do

  • Analyze FHA, VA, USDA, and Conventional mortgage loan applications to determine creditworthiness and eligibility.
  • Review loan-to-value (LTV), debt-to-income (DTI), credit reports, income documentation, assets, employment history, and supporting documentation.
  • Calculate borrower income and evaluate repayment capacity.
  • Review DU, LPA, and agency underwriting findings.
  • Structure loans that meet agency, investor, and company guidelines.
  • Identify potential credit risks and make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Issue loan approvals, suspensions, and denials with clear underwriting conditions.
  • Review mortgage loan files for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Evaluate residential appraisals and supporting collateral documentation.
  • Request additional documentation when necessary to support loan eligibility or collateral value.
  • Ensure underwriting documentation is complete prior to final approval.
  • Maintain detailed underwriting notes and loan file integrity throughout the underwriting process.
  • Partner with Loan Officers, Processors, Closers, and Operations teams to move loans efficiently through the underwriting process.
  • Clearly communicate underwriting decisions and conditions.
  • Provide guidance regarding agency guidelines and loan structure.
  • Help resolve complex loan scenarios while maintaining excellent customer service.
  • Collaborate virtually through Microsoft Teams, email, and other communication platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with FHA, VA, USDA, Conventional, investor, and company underwriting guidelines.
  • Maintain current knowledge of agency updates and investor overlays.
  • Review Quality Control findings when applicable.
  • Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with Fair Lending, TRID, RESPA, ECOA, HMDA, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain the highest standards of underwriting accuracy and consistency.
  • Manage an underwriting pipeline based on your selected availability.
  • Utilize Encompass Loan Origination System to document underwriting decisions.
  • Prioritize files while meeting agreed-upon service-level expectations.
  • Support workflow improvements and underwriting best practices.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives when available.
  • Review FHA, VA, USDA, and Conventional loan files.
  • Calculate borrower income and analyze credit risk.
  • Review appraisals and collateral documentation.
  • Issue underwriting decisions and clear conditions.
  • Communicate with Loan Officers, Processors, and Closers.

What they require

  • Minimum of 5+ years of Government Mortgage Underwriting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of FHA, VA, USDA, and Conventional underwriting guidelines.
  • Excellent analytical and credit risk assessment skills.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating remotely with internal teams.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Preferred: DE (Direct Endorsement) Certification preferred.
  • Preferred: VA SAR/LAPP authority preferred.
  • Preferred: Experience underwriting FHA, VA, USDA, and Conventional loans.
  • Preferred: Experience in high-volume mortgage underwriting environments.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of investor overlays and Quality Control processes.
  • 100% Remote – U.S. Based.
