The Entry-Level Squeeze: Half of Remote Jobs Want a Veteran

Across the ~8,600 remote-first postings we track, half are explicitly senior and only 6.6% are junior. Here's where the ladder steepens, where early-career roles actually live, and what it means if you're trying to break in.

A lone figure beneath one enormous staircase step; overlaid stat 6.6% of remote roles are junior

If you're early in your career and the remote market feels like a locked door, it's not you. Across the ~8,600 remote-first postings we track at Remotera, half are explicitly senior and only 6.6% are explicitly junior — about one in fifteen.

This is a remote-first, tech/crypto/fintech-heavy slice of hiring, not the whole labour market. But within it, the shape is unmistakable: the door opens widest for people who already have a track record.

The shape of the market

Half the market wants a veteran

Sorted by seniority, the 8,629 postings break down like this: senior 50.0% (4,318), mid 27.7% (2,392), unspecified 10.2% (878), junior 6.6% (567), lead 4.1% (352), staff 1.0% (82), and principal 0.5% (40).

So more than three-quarters of the market is aimed at mid-level talent or above. Junior, lead, staff, and principal roles combined are barely more than a tenth of it. The remote-first world is built for people mid-career and up.

Where early-career roles actually live

Not every function is a wall. If you weight each role by the share of its postings aimed at junior or mid talent, the openings cluster in a few places. Support is the most accessible — 63.6% of its postings are junior or mid. Operations (47.0%), HR (44.9%), and QA (41.6%) follow.

Engineering runs the other way: fullstack (30.9% junior/mid), project management (30.3%), and most senior-heavy specialisms want experience before they want you. The practical read: early-career remote work is easier to enter through support, operations, HR, and QA — then move laterally once you've built the track record the senior roles demand.

The remote-first market isn't built for beginners. It's built for people who already have a track record — and priced to pull everyone toward the top.

What to do with this

For job seekers: if you're early-career, apply wide and early — only about 1 in 15 postings is explicitly junior, so volume matters. Target support, operations, HR, and QA as entry points, and remember the mid-to-senior jump (+$88k) is where the real raise waits.

For employers: if half your competitors' postings are senior and only 6.6% are junior, a real entry-level pipeline is a hiring advantage, not a cost centre. You're fishing in a pond almost nobody else is casting into.

The verdict?
